Defining dry weight and curb weight
When you research the weight of a golf cart, you may come across two different types of weights: dry weight and curb weight. So, what’s the distinction?
Dry Weight: This is the weight of the golf cart without any seats, batteries, accessories, or fluids. This is the weight that some manufacturers use as a reference. Do not use this as the final weight.
Curb Weight: This is the weight with batteries and also includes all cargo, seats, and fluids. This will generally be the final golf cart weight and the one you’ll be able to compare against other models and brands.
Now that we know the two types of golf cart weights, let’s discuss why it is important to know your cart’s weight.
Reasons to know a golf cart weight
More than just mere curiosity, knowing the weight of your golf cart is important for a few reasons:
- Knowing the weight will help you choose the right tires for your golf cart. If you choose tires that are too light, they may not be able to support the weight of the golf cart and cause problems.
- The weight of the golf cart also determines the speed of the golf cart. If the golf cart is too heavy, it may not be able to reach the maximum speed, and that can be tricky on slopes. Golf carts that are excessively light can suffer from instability, causing some issues in tight turns. Avoiding both extremes of weight, too light or too heavy, will be the wisest choice.
- Knowing the weight limit will play a major role in the cart’s towing power. Depending on the cart’s towing capacity, you’ll be able to tow a larger or smaller trailer with equipment, and supplies behind the golf cart.
- Last but not least, is maneuverability. Heavier carts will enjoy more stability but might suffer on slopes or tricky terrain, whereas lighter carts will be more flexible in steep areas but may have issues with stability.
As you can see, there are quite a few reasons why it’s important to know the weight of your golf cart. Not only is it good information to have, but it can also help you make sure your golf cart is well adapted to your needs.
Gas vs Electric golf cart weights
Electric carts with a battery will generally weigh much more than gas-powered carts.
If you’re looking for a lightweight golf cart that has both towing power and flexibility on different terrains, you’re probably better off choosing a gas-powered model. These carts are typically lighter because they don’t have the weight of batteries.
On the other hand, electric carts have many benefits that might make the extra weight worth it for you. These carts might be a bit slower, but they are much quieter than gas-powered models and don’t produce emissions. Electric carts are also easier to maintain than gas-powered models since there are no fluids to change and fewer moving parts, and trust me, this alone can be the main benefit of choosing electric carts.
How much weight can a golf cart hold?
Here again, we have an ‘it depends’ type of answer.
But generally speaking (or writing), for a 2-passenger golf cart, the carrying capacity is around 600 lbs. Four-seat golf carts can hold between 600 and 800 lbs of cargo. And 6-passenger golf carts have a maximum carrying capacity of 1200 lbs. There are other gas models with an 8-passenger capacity that hold up to 1500 lbs, but they’re an exception for the most part.
Of course, the weight that a golf cart can ultimately hold depends on the make and model of the golf cart. It’s always best to consult the owner’s manual or the manufacturer to get an accurate idea of how much weight your golf cart can safely carry.
In general, however, most golf carts can support a decent amount of weight. So whether you’re using the golf cart to haul tools around the farm, move around the golf course, or simply transport your family and friends around the neighborhood, you just need to pick the right option that will fit your needs and cargo capacity.
What Impacts the Weight of a Golf Cart?
What are the factors that impact the weight of a golf cart?
One of the biggest factors is the type of battery used. Lead-acid batteries tend to be heavy, while lithium batteries can be up to five times lighter.
One of the major factors in the average weight of a golf cart will be the material used on the cart itself. An all-metal golf cart will be heavier than one made with an aluminum frame.
Another factor is whether or not the golf cart has racks or other accessories mounted. Racks can add significant weight, so they should be considered when determining the overall weight of the golf cart. Racks and accessories should only be used when they’re strictly necessary.
Finally, keep in mind that golf carts come in different sizes and styles. Some golf carts are designed to be lightweight and agile, while others are built for hauling heavy loads. When it comes to weight, it’s important to choose a golf cart that best suits your needs.
How much does a gas club cart weigh?
A gas golf cart typically weighs between 610 and 700 pounds. This weight can vary depending on the size and style of the cart, as well as any accessories that might be mounted, the number of seats, and the gas tank.
Heavier gas-powered golf carts tend to have more features, such as a powerful engine or a storage area. If you’re looking for a gas-powered golf cart that’s easy to maneuver, look for one that’s on the lighter side.
When choosing a gas club car golf cart, it’s important to consider the weight of the cart and this can change from model to model.
For instance, Carryall 295 from Club Car has a weight of 675 lbs with a payload capacity of 1195 lbs. The Carryall 500, on the other hand, has a heftier weight of 850 lbs but can accommodate a higher payload of 1550 lbs.
